Shaurya Chakra Award
The Shaurya Chakra is a prestigious military decoration in India, awarded for acts of gallantry and bravery. It is the third-highest peacetime gallantry award in the country, following the Ashoka Chakra and Kirti Chakra.
Purpose of the Shaurya Chakra
The award recognizes:
- Exceptional Courage: Acts of bravery and valor in situations not involving direct combat with the enemy.
- Gallant Actions in Peacetime: Heroic efforts during operations such as counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism, rescue missions, or other dangerous circumstances.
- Civilian Contributions: Civilians, as well as military personnel, are eligible if they display extraordinary bravery in saving lives or combating perilous situations.
Eligibility
- Members of the Indian Armed Forces (Army, Navy, and Air Force).
- Members of the Paramilitary Forces and Police Forces.
- Civilians who demonstrate outstanding courage.
Award Details
- The Shaurya Chakra medal is circular, bronze, and bears a replica of the Ashoka Chakra on its obverse side, with the words “Shaurya Chakra” inscribed in Hindi and English.
- Recipients receive a medal, a certificate, and a cash allowance.
Significance
The Shaurya Chakra is often awarded for bravery in counter-terrorism operations, rescue missions, or other life-threatening situations in which the awardee risks their own life to protect others or perform heroic acts.
