Param Vir Chakra Award
The Param Vir Chakra (PVC) is India’s highest military decoration awarded for displaying extraordinary bravery, courage, and self-sacrifice in the presence of the enemy. It is the most prestigious honor a soldier can receive in recognition of their valor during wartime.
For What Param Vir Chakra Award is Given
The award is conferred for:
- Acts of Supreme Gallantry: Exceptional bravery in the face of the enemy, either on land, at sea, or in the air.
- Extraordinary Courage: Selfless acts of heroism and steadfastness under the most adverse circumstances.
- Ultimate Sacrifice: Often awarded posthumously to soldiers who lay down their lives for the nation while performing acts of unparalleled valor.
Eligibility
- Indian Armed Forces Personnel: Soldiers from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force.
- Members of all ranks are eligible, from commissioned officers to non-commissioned personnel.
- The award is given only for actions during war, armed conflict, or operations involving direct engagement with the enemy.
Award Components
- Medal: A circular bronze medal with the state emblem of India on the obverse side and the words “Param Vir Chakra” in Hindi and English.
- Cash Allowance and Benefits: Recipients receive a monetary reward, and state governments often provide additional honors such as pensions, land, or housing.
- Posthumous Recognition: If awarded posthumously, the honor is presented to the recipient’s family.
